Should You Choose an HMO or a PPO?

Dental insurance helps cover essential care for your teeth and gums.

And What’s the Difference Between an HMO and a PPO?

From the viewpoint of the Sacramento Dentistry Group, we can provide you with services whether you have dental insurance with a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) or a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). We view it as our job to figure out the benefits available through your specific insurance and how they affect the cost of the services you need. Our office always wants you to know before any procedure what you will have to pay to complete it and what options you have. That’s part of our belief in maintaining high standards in service and patient education.

HMOs and PPOs Compared

If you have a choice of plan, however, we believe the PPO offers significant advantages in relation to patient freedom. With an HMO, you have one dentist, usually selected by the company, that acts as your Primary Care Physician. All dental visits and any referrals to a specialist must go through this dentist and this dentist only.

With a PPO, you have a large number of dentists and specialists to choose from. If you want to change your dentist, you choose your new care provider. If you want to see a specialist, you only need to make an appointment from the insurer’s list of preferred dentists. Freedom of choice is the hallmark of the PPO, while still preserving the cost savings of the HMO.

This is good to know. I have a PPO and like the flexibility it offers.
