Caring for Your Temporary Cap

While your permanent crown is custom-made, either by our in-house Ceramill system or a dental laboratory, you leave our dental office with a temporary cap or crown. This ensures that you’re comfortable and that your tooth is protected until your permanent crown is installed. While your temporary crown is firmly in place, remember it is temporary and it’s intended to be removed soon, so some care is needed.

  • Keep the gum tissue healthy around your tooth by continuing your regular brushing routine, along with a course of modified flossing. When flossing around your temporary crown, remember to pull the floss out through your teeth to the side, not in an upward motion as usual.
  • Your bite may seem a bit off after the numbness goes away, so do not be overly concerned with this. Your normal bite will be restored and adjusted after your permanent crown is installed.
  • Avoid chewy and sticky foods while wearing a temporary crown. Yet even with meticulous care, your temporary cap may become dislodged. If this occurs, do not be alarmed, but immediate replacement is necessary. Promptly put your cap back on, with a dab of Vaseline if available. This is necessary to avoid your teeth shifting. Call the office of the Sacramento Dentistry Group at 916-538-6900 if this occurs so you can be seen as soon as possible by your Sacramento dentist.
  • Don’t fail to return for your permanent crown! Many people find the temporary quite comfortable, but it is only a short-term fix. Your permanent crown is necessary for good dental health.

With proper care and attention, you’ll soon enjoy the benefits of your permanent and lasting crown. Please feel free to contact our Sacramento office by phone or via our website if you have any questions or concerns. We want your crown experience to be a healthy and successful one!
