What is a Dental Home?

A dental home is defined as a place where you can receive comprehensive dental care, like at the Sacramento Dentistry Group.

A bill promoting dental health care was recently passed by Congress and signed by the President. In the Action for Dental Health Act (ADHA), the concept of a “dental home” is promoted as beneficial for children and adults. What is a dental home and how can the Sacramento Dentistry Group help you to find one?

Defining a Dental Home

The concept of a dental home starts with the idea that medical and dental care are essential for maintaining optimal health. If we have a way to get help on a consistent basis for medical and dental preventive care, then we have what is called a “Medical-Dental Home” by a number of different physician and dentistry groups. The primary focus of the dental home concept is on pediatric care, that is, health care for children. Nevertheless, the ADHA promotes the idea that adults also need a place to call their “dental home.”

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry defines the dental home as follows:

The dental home is the ongoing relationship between the dentist and the patient, inclusive of all aspects of oral health care delivered in a comprehensive, continuously accessible, coordinated, and family-centered way.”

By selecting a home for dental care early in life, and choosing one that can serve the whole family, studies show that you actually reduce the likelihood of experiencing oral disease and reduce your costs for dentistry.
